Organ Grinder: Head Mold pt.1

After completing the head sculpt I built a wooden box around it to create the plaster mold. Many people have different ways they do this, here's how I roll:

Method:
A) Pour first half of plaster up to the ears. Set ping pong balls for keys. Let harden for approx 2-4 hours.

B) Prepare hardened mold for 2nd half of pour. Remove ping pong balls, cover surface of mold with release agent (Crisco works fine). You can see I set screws into his pupils. That is so that the screws will anchor to the second half of the mold and pull out of the clay head upon separation. They need to be in the mold when the silicone rubber is poured so that the eyes will create eye sockets in the silicone rubber.

C) Pour 2nd half of mold, let harden for approx 2-4 hours.

D) Remove wood stocks and gently separate mold with a flat head screw driver. Lastly, clean mold thoroughly with soap and water.

Thanks for chekin' me out! Comments welcome!

Hey Devin - great illustration of the process. How did the mold come out - bubbles or anything? Can't wait to see the cast head!

"...and Dan Rowe teached me ev'ry ting i knows 'bout puppets makin'!"

Wow, I'm not sure i deserve all the credit, it is still a very nice thing to say. I suppose it does seem like just yesterday that I watched you pitifully struggle to keep up with me in stop motion 2, and I have to say you've done a great job of looking like you've made progress since then. And please, don't feel like you need to thank me for these kind words, the fact that you so clearly continue to emulate my work is thanks enough, provided it's only for promotional use and no direct profit is made... 'Kay, pal? Yeah... have a good night.

Wow Dan is modest!
Sick process photos.
The explanation is cool too... especially for someone like me whose never made a puppet before.

I can totally stalk you now! It's good to see what you're doing now. I've been making NO ART. And I'd like to learn how to do some stop motion animation. So, basically what I"m telling you is that you need to move out to Portland pronto. ok? OK.
